Finding Contentment in an Old Wooden Tea Shop

Describing the quiet moments of contemplating complex questions inside our heads

As I walk alone on this sidewalk, I’m filled with contradicting thoughts about my life.

On my left side is a fence guarding a park with tall trees, while on my right, an empty street stretches out, lined with small, old homes and shops.

The stars above me keep blinking.

I ask myself, is there a purpose to all this madness? What truly is the point of finding oneself when we are nothing compared to this universe? Ah! I know it’s because each of us is so unique that we are ourselves, a universe unto our own.

I hear footsteps up ahead.

It’s dark, so I can’t see, and the street lamps aren’t providing enough light.

The steps are getting closer.

Finally, a man walks by me, and as I look into his eyes, he seems lost — not in direction, but in life. Then, I return to the endless questions in my head.

Is there such a thing as a directionless life? How can any life have direction when we are all so random and living so freely?

I’m almost at my destination.

I open the old wooden door, and a bell rings. I go to the counter and order a matcha. I love this tea shop. It’s dark, the floors are raw wood, and with each step, you hear sounds of creaking.

I make my way to a cozy chair by the window. The window is a classic bay window with a street view. This tea shop is open late, I thought to myself.

As I look out onto the empty street, I wonder to myself, ‘What are morals? Where do they come from? What is the root of our morals?’

Ah! Yes, I read it in a Nietzsche book — morals stem from the values of those in power and are later used by the oppressed to serve their interests. That book is interesting.

I continue to sip my iced matcha, the coldness of the tea enwrapping me, and I find contentment in the quiet old tea shop.

The questions in my mind remain unanswered, and new questions arise, but at this moment, perhaps they do not need to be answered or pondered.

Maybe this is what life is about: questions and pondering.
