I want to explain that when I write about the content I read in a book, watch in a movie, or hear in a song, etc., it is my opinion and what I took away from the story. It is not necessarily the true meaning of the content or what the author, director, artist, etc. intended it to mean.
Since I was a child in school, all the way up to college, I always created my own modern meanings from the stories we read in English class.
Some teachers would get frustrated with me, while others would admire it (although very few did).
I was often told that I was wrong or that I didn’t read the story correctly. I always received A’s in English and every subject besides math, but whenever we discussed stories in class, I would always raise my hand and share my opinions.
When I write about books, movies, music, and life, I am not trying to tell you the answer. I am showing you what these things revealed to me.
Teachers and students would argue with me and become frustrated because I gave new meanings to the stories we read. It was never because I didn’t understand the context. I understood it very well. It was because I felt the words and the stories, and I applied them to my own life and to modern society.
To me, stories are not just words written on a page. They are experiences that continue to change depending on who is reading them and what they have lived through.
A story may begin with one person’s meaning, but it can continue creating new meanings in the lives of everyone who experiences it.
